Agroecological Farming Techniques

Winrock International is seeking the assistance of a Farmer-to-Farmer volunteer for a 20-day volunteer assignment (including travel) in Kidira, Bakel department, Tambacounda region, Southeastern Senegal. The volunteer’s primary responsibility will be to provide training on agroecological farming techniques. Specifically, the volunteer will provide training on soil structure and fertility improvement, the use of natural fertilizers, best farming practices, agriculture-livestock integration to better control pests and diseases without harming the environment, management and conservation techniques for water, as well as composting, nitrogen fixation, and the potential of microorganisms.

The volunteer will also be expected to train farmers under ONG La Lumiere, particularly women’s groups from Sinthiou Fissa and Gourel Mamadou Bara. This training will equip them with essential skills in nursery techniques, plot preparation techniques, plant handling during transplanting, and chemical handling, among other things. These farmers primarily cultivate cabbage, hot and sweet peppers, okra, tomatoes, lettuce, eggplant, African eggplant, and onions, and the training will significantly enhance their agricultural practices and productivity.

The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications and background:

Master’s degree in agriculture, agronomy, agroecology, agricultural education and training, or similar fields.

Experience in the field of horticulture and knowledge and practice of agroecology.

Ability to train women groups farmers on agroecology.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

French language skills preferred but not mandatory.
