Solar Energy Training

Location: Guinea

Assignment Number: GUI296

Volunteers Requested: 1

Recruiter: Eric Washington | Eric.Washington@winrock.org |

Winrock International requests the support of a Farmer-to-Farmer volunteer for a 15-day volunteer assignment (including travel) located in Dalaba, Guinea. The volunteer will work with members of the NGO Solidarité and its affiliates in the use of solar energy in the processing of local products with solar energy to facilitate access to energy sources in rural areas. The trainee of the NGO and its affiliated member will in turn train the communities on solar energy usage to benefit a maximum of rural community, protect the environment, obtain another source of income and fight against poverty in rural areas.

The Dalaba prefecture is supplied with electricity by the Kinkon power station, which is operational for a maximum of six months of the year during the rainy season. During the dry season, the low water level of the river leads to load shedding and recurrent blackouts in the town, resulting in electricity shortages. Added to this is the fire at the main fuel depot in Conakry, leading to fuel shortages in the interior. Given that the prefecture has sufficient sunshine, the NGO would like to have the technical capacity to produce solar energy to cover its needs and facilitate the regular implementation of one of its main activities, which is the processing of local products.

Volunteer will:

• Prepare all educational and training materials related to solar energy production techniques and the creation of solar tools adapted for local use.

• Assist NGO Solidarite to benefit from the use of solar energy by adapting all the techniques of solar cookers to the local context.

• Help Solidarite to use the tools to process local products, and to benefit from the importance that the ecosystem and consumers by working together can make to harness the power of solar energy and create a better future for all.

The volunteer should have the following qualifications and background:

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in power generation, electrical engineering, solar energy engineering, or another relevant field.

• Experience in promoting an energy-conscious and educated society by creating channels of consumption that are adaptable to local needs.

• Experience in designing and implementing solar tools that provide multi-dimensional energy.
