Training on Improved Seed Production

Location: Guinea

Assignment Number: GUI294

Volunteers Requested: 1

Recruiter: Sherri Kabaou | SKabaou@winrock.org | 501.280.3019

Winrock International requests the support of a Farmer-to-Farmer volunteer for a 17 day volunteer assignment (including travel) located in Kissidougou – Guinea Forest. The volunteer will train members of the Groupment of BENDA WADAA on vegetable seed production and conservation techniques. The training should provide knowledge on seed breeding, multiplication, conservation, and quality control for better usage in horticulture. Our newly host members are currently interested in the following seeds and crops: chili pepper, tomato, eggplant, okra, maize and watermelon etc.

Due to the high expenses associated with importing seeds, the members of the host community have turned to seed recycling to lower production costs. However, lacking specific skills and training in this practice, they struggle with seed breeding, preservation, multiplication, and quality control. The objective of this assignment is to equip members of the Benda Wadaa Groupment with the necessary skills and knowledge in seed production. This will empower them to boost production locally instead of relying on costly imported seeds.

The volunteer should have the following qualifications and background:

• University degree or higher in agriculture, seed production, or related topic or five years of seed production experience.

• Experience in seed quality assurance during production and post-harvest

• Good written and verbal communication skills

• French language skills are a plus, but translation will be provided if necessary

• Experience in training and transferring hands-on knowledge to adults

• Ability to travel to site about 600 km to Conakry by the project vehicle.
