The John D. Rockefeller 3RD Scholars Program is a grant-making initiative that supports bi-country applied research on pressing natural resource and agricultural challenges in Asia. The Program continues Rockefeller's commitment to building human capacity in Asia by
- Increasing the capacity and leadership skills of Asian researchers to respond to urgent development problems by providing recommendations directly to decision makers; and
- Fostering problem-focused, multi-country research that enables regional cooperation to sustain and restore rural agriculture and ecosystems.
Through a competitive application process the Program commissions teams of researchers to work on issues identified by an advisory panel of Asian experts in collaboration with Winrock staff. Research teams engage with a network of eminent scholars and leaders, including former A/D/C fellows and current policymakers. This interaction enhances the ability of participating researchers to influence policy and implement solutions regionally.
Winrock International has a long and distinguished history of successful agricultural and environmental training programs in Asia, beginning in 1954 with the Agricultural Development Council (A/D/C), founded by John D. Rockefeller 3RD. In 1985, the A/D/C merged with two other Rockefeller family-related organizations to become Winrock International. In 2004, on the 50th anniversary of the A/D/C, Winrock created the John D. Rockefeller 3RD Scholars Program to recognize Rockefeller's lifelong contributions to international development and cooperation.
