In Memoriam:
Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, 1914-2009

Dr. Norman E. Borlaug was a founding member of the Winrock International board of directors and we will be forever grateful for his guidance and friendship. He devoted his life to improving the world's food supply and fighting hunger and poverty.

Among his many well-deserved awards and recognitions were the Nobel Peace Prize (1970) and the Congressional Gold Medal (2007). Dr. Borlaug's commitment to feed Africa in a way that had been successful in India and Pakistan led to the establishment—with the help of President Jimmy Carter and Winrock's founding president Robert Havener—of the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA). Winrock remains closely involved in the SAA.

Dr. Borlaug had a vision to honor those who have made significant contributions to improving the world's food supply, and in 1986 that vision became a reality with the creation of the World Food Prize. The Prize was created under the auspices of Winrock and was later transferred to the sponsorship of the John Ruan Foundation.

Dr. Borlaug was an exceptional man whose lifelong dedication to improve the lives of people around the world has and will continue to inspire us all to carry on his legacy.
