Multiple-Use Services
Poor populations need water for many essential activities, such as drinking, hygiene, gardening, watering
livestock and operating their small businesses. Yet, the traditional model of water service delivery
focuses on single-use systems, such as those solely designed for domestic use or irrigation.
Widespread unplanned use of single-use systems often leads to sustainability problems, poses health
risks and contributes to community conflict.
An alternative model, known as multiple-use services (MUS), is a consumer-oriented approach to
water service delivery that takes people's multiple domestic and productive water needs as the
starting point to plan, finance, and manage integrated water services.
