Water

In Nepal – Improving water services is represented by larger quantity, greater quality and reliability and shorter distances. Winrock International has an extensive legacy of work on water-related issues that spans 90 projects in 29 countries. The Water Innovation Program, established in 2005, focuses on innovative approaches to meet the many water needs of impoverished households, from drinking and sanitation to food production and income generation. The Multiple-use Water Services approach, which involves provision of water for health and livelihoods, is a cornerstone of the Program. "Multiple-use water services cost more than traditional single-use services, but they have significant advantages because they generate income, health and other benefits. This additional income is crucial because it empowers the users, who are also the owners, to maintain their water system themselves," says Mary Renwick, head of the Water Innovation Program. Dr. Renwick is a water resources economist with 18 years of experience developing, managing, and implementing water resource projects.
