Bioenergy

In the Philippines – Ethanol produced from sugar cane represents the greatest opportunity for expanding ethanol production. Since the 1980s, Winrock has designed and implemented sustainable bioenergy projects around the world. In 2007, Winrock launched the Bioenergy Innovation Program to build on this experience and help address the new challenges and opportunities caused by concerns about increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and the rapid increase in fossil fuel prices.

"We work on commercially viable projects that bring value to the local agricultural community, are socially responsible and environmentally sustainable. This is the only way we can ensure that our work yields tangible, long-term benefits," says Bioenergy Innovation Director, David Walden. Mr. Walden has more than 30 years of experience implementing energy projects worldwide.

The Program works extensively on sugarcane to ethanol projects, and considers other feedstocks when appropriate, such as sweet sorghum, corn, jatropha, Indian oil palm, coconut, wood chips and algae.
