Confronting a Pandemic:
Gender-based Violence and HIV/AIDS
|
|
 |
Research and anecdotal evidence has shown a direct relationship between gender-based
violence and HIV transmission, an association that is particularly deadly for women.
In recognition of the International Day Against Violence Against Women on November 25th
and World AIDS Day on December 1st, two dates that fall within the
16 Days of Activism
Against Gender Violence campaign, Winrock is pleased to highlight some of its innovative
strategies to address gender-based violence through HIV prevention, education, and the
empowerment of women and girls.

According to UNAIDS, UNFPA, and UNIFEM,
a survey among 1,366 South African women showed that
women who were beaten by their partners were 48 percent more likely to be infected with HIV
than those who were not. Additionally, schools are too often unsafe places where girls and
boys face physical, sexual, or psychological harm, gender stereotypes, and unequal power
relations. Exposure to violence leaves more children, especially girls, vulnerable to HIV.
Addressing gender-based violence and HIV prevention is a critical element in ensuring that
schools are safe spaces for children, and that women's human rights are respected.
