Promoting the Use of Biogas to Reduce Indoor Air Pollution

RATIONALE
The goal of REPSO Nepal is to increase investment in clean energy. One of the barriers that this sector is facing is the inadequate link with the health benefits of using clean energy. REPSO Nepal is working closely with the government and other institutions to promote household energy technologies like biogas and this study would help to establish closer link between biogas technology and health benefits which in turn would help to scale up biogas installation in the country. Indoor air pollution caused by biomass fuel is one of the four greatest risks in developing countries including Nepal and significant improvement in the indoor air quality can be achieved by using biogas.

OBJECTIVES
The main objective of this project is to demonstrate through the cost benefit analysis that biogas could be cost an effective intervention to reduce indoor air pollution.

ACTIVITIES
Prepare cost benefit analysis of different household energy interventions to reduce indoor air pollution, carry out monitoring of indoor air quality and awareness campaigns on the health effects of poor indoor air quality and the role of household energy technology to reduce such effects.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Developed status report for Nepal on household energy, indoor air pollution and health. Organized a national workshop to present the status report and to discuss main barriers and options to reduce indoor air pollution in Nepal.
