Utilizing Carbon Offsets to Protect Forests
Winrock International has experience in the evaluation, implementation, and monitoring and verification of carbon sequestration.
Winrock will verify and update the 2002 Carbon Offsets Analysis and Status Report incorporating regrowth and Carbon Impact Zone assessments. Long-term technical operating protocols will also be updated.
Using a sound methodology Winrock will calculate offsets and assess leakage. Analyses of carbon offsets from a forest sector carbon project will be documented and that information will be made available to the public. Results will be used to build the confidence of the Government of Bolivia to certify and potentially sell its share of offsets. Proceeds will be used for future forest protection efforts at this site and throughout Bolivia.
- A report by the Winrock team on "The 2003 Carbon Offsets Analysis and Status Report for the Noel Kempff Climate Action Project", that summarizes the work on objective 1. This report included a revision of the averted logging component due to results from the re-measurements of the logging impact plots and paired unlogged plots in Cerro Pelao, a revision of the timber harvesting baseline based on new analysis by Sohngen and Brown (Sohngen, B. and S. Brown. Measuring leakage from carbon projects in open economies: a stop timber harvesting project in Bolivia as a case study. Canadian Journal of Research 34: 829-839), and a revised estimate of the carbon benefits from the averted logging component based on the incorporation of these new data.
- A report by the Winrock team on "Carbon Monitoring and Verification Protocols for the Noel Kempff Climate Action Project."
- Revised USIJI report with updates on the technical aspects of the Noel Kempff project outlining how baselines, leakage and the carbon credits were estimated. This update summarized all the work done by Winrock for this project since the start in 1996.
