Putting Policy to Work to Safeguard Natural ResourcesRATIONALEThe Red Sea coast has some of the most impressive and extensive coral reefs in the world. The rapid growth of tourism is threatening the reefs. Winrock has worked to protect this fragile marine environment since 1996 under the Environmentally Sustainable Tourism project. That project increased reef protection awareness. It also installed mooring buoys for dive boats and provided training to boat captains. Additionally, it helped establish and support ranger operations and conducted marine assessments that provided the baseline for later monitoring and protection efforts. OBJECTIVES Provide core management and analytical support as well as resource management and conservation of Red Sea coral reefs, islands, and ecosystems. ACTIVITIES Winrock is a subcontractor to the International Resources Group (IRG), provides marine resources expertise, and has primary responsibility for activities on Egypt's Red Sea coast. Additional activities include work with the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency to further government adoption and implementation of policy measures and operational support for the Red Sea Rangers. |
