The Winrock Approach -
Effective, Sustainable and Scaleable Programs
Feature Story

Improving Livelihoods, Health, and the Environment
in sub-Saharan Africa

Winrock International's integrated programs and services offer long-term, sustainable solutions to address the interrelated economic, social, and environmental challenges poor households face in meeting their water, energy, and sanitation needs.

The Problem
Poor households in sub-Saharan Africa face a range of inter-related economic, social, and environmental challenges in meeting their water, energy and sanitation needs. Large-scale centralized energy and sanitation services are not an option for the majority of households in rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa. Solutions require decentralized and scalable approaches.

The Potential of Biogas
Biogas digesters produce an odorless gas for cooking and lighting through anaerobic digestion of animal and human waste. Simple, low-cost household systems can provide enough energy for household cooking and up to several hours of lighting per day. Integrated rural biogas initiatives address household energy, sanitation, health, and gender equity considerations, while protecting the environment and promoting economic development.
